BioMarin Manufacturing Shanbally

Transforming Lives Through Genetic Discovery

Introduction to BioMarin:

Over two decades ago when BioMarin first opened its doors, the company focused on helping people with rare diseases. These diseases mostly affected children and were often ignored.

Throughout its history, BioMarin has pursued bold science while respecting, educating, and connecting with patients. Their discoveries have led to countless breakthroughs, best-in-class treatments and many ‘firsts’ in the category.

As the organisation looks forward, it strives to make an even greater impact by continuing to apply the same science-driven, patient-forward approach to a broader range of genetic disorders.

This is their shared passion and their purpose.

The Brief for the BioMarin Shanbally Manufacturing identity:

BioMarin now employs over 3,000 people worldwide. The organisation is huge and works across many cultures and nationalities.

I was approached by BioMarin in Cork to create a stand-alone identity for the Manufacturing Division of the business.

This new identity would be a rallying point for the large group of manufacturing staff and give them a sense of ownership over their vital role in the serving of patients.

Through workshops with groups of employees at all levels of the organisation, we identified the key values of the Manufacturing Division of BioMarin. This was very much a collaborative project, and it was important for all voices to be heard and to have an input.

Timeline:

The timeline for this project was eight months, with regular meetings and feedback loops. The new identity evolved through these meetings and input from all the stakeholders.

The Development of the New Identity:

The new identity needed to stand alone and yet feel closely connected to the BioMarin parent. I brought the umbrella brand colour palette across and combined it with the clean, airy, corporate - yet friendly - personality to create a new design. It was very important to the stakeholders that their shared values be part of the logo design so I designed several versions of the logo - one with all of the values circling the main symbol and a secondary version for use at small sizes, without the values.

Gráinne O’Leary was the Project Lead on the new identity and it was a pleasure to work with her and her team.
